Slashdot, despite being a Linux-oriented site, has many good Windows admins reading it, and every so often, they run an article that has tons and tons of good WIndows information. I have been meaning to compile a list of these articles for some time, and I have finally gotten off my lazy butt and started to do so.

Note: if you haven't read slashdot before, here's a tip: they have a moderation system in place where comments can be rated from -1 (bad) to +5 (good). For best results, set the threshold to 4 or 5, click 'change', and then read.

Here's a good article from the Wall St. Journal about Spyware. Quick, clear, and an excellent summary.

Also common at slashdot are discussions about databases. Always lotsa good tips in those articles too. Here's one.

And Apache. A book on hardening Apache.

Note to self: every so often (OK, once, maybe twice, but I think the first was when my disk went bad) Postgres won't start. Postgres-dependant PHP pages give errors like "Warning: Unable to connect to PostgreSQL server: connectDBStart() -- connect() failed: No such file or directory Is the postmaster running at 'localhost' and accepting connections on Unix socket '5432'? in /home/brianash/public_html/illustrator/showall.php on line 3". For some reason, Postgres didn't start at boot time. `cd` to /etc/rc3.d/ and `ls | grep p` shows the magic word is `postgresql`. If `service postgresql status` shows it's stopped, `service postgresql start` should get it going. At least, it did this time.
